A mother is not just a woman who gives birth to a child, but also a woman who nurtures life. Just like the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose fiat paved the way for the story of our salvation through her giving birth to Jesus and nurturing Him to become the man He was meant to be. As we celebrated the month of Mary last May, we continue to regard her as the best example of a woman who was, is, and will always be a loving, giving, and surrendering follower of Christ.

As St. Therese of Lisieux said, “The loveliest masterpiece of the heart of God is the heart of a mother,” and indeed, most of us have surely felt the unconditional love of our mothers. It is a love that knows no bounds and a love that gives everything. I, too, can relate with this. Growing up, I witnessed how our family’s life turned upside down when my mother lost her job. We not only lost our comfortable lifestyle but also found ourselves buried in debt. My parents quarreled most of the time because of our financial problems, and I had to transfer schools while we adjusted our lifestyle. My siblings, who were transitioning to adulthood during that time, also struggled with the changes we were experiencing. They were frustrated with the fact that they cannot even buy the things they wanted and needed. They became disobedient and rebellious at some point and it was understandable in such a crucial moment, and my parents were just trying to cope with it. Seeing how dark and chaotic those days were, witnessing how our family was falling apart, seeing my father coming home drunk every night, watching my siblings fight over things, everything seemed hopeless through the eyes of a child like me. However, even in that dark and chaotic phase of our lives, I am deeply awed by how my mother handled it all.

I would say it was because of my mother’s prayers and hard work that our family remained intact amidst the struggles we’ve encountered in life. As time went by, my mother got a new job, my father also stopped drinking alcohol, my siblings got to understand our life situation and became mature and responsible. Eventually they graduated and even committed themselves to support my studies. Now, we are all professionals and my siblings already have their own families. It was our mother’s loving, giving, and surrendering heart that lifted our prayers to the merciful heart of Jesus. As a child, I will always be grateful to God for giving me a mother who leads me and our family towards heaven.

Let us always pray for all mothers that they may be given the grace to fulfill their extraordinary role in our world.

A Prayer for Mothers

All-loving God, we give you thanks and praise for mothers young and old.

We pray for young mothers, who give life and count toes and tend to our every need; May they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care for their families and themselves with great joy.

We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us; May they continue to guide us in strong and gentle ways.

We remember mothers who are separated from their children because of war, poverty, or conflict; May they feel the loving embrace of our God who wipes every tear away.

We pray for women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and compassion.

We remember mothers. grandmothers, and great-grandmothers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. Amen.
